You can see it from most of the beaches in the south of the island: a huge white figure sitting calmly on top of the hills between Chalong and Kata. The Big Buddha, officially Phra Phuttha Ming Mongkol Eknakiri, is Phuket’s best-known landmark and one of its most peaceful places.

What to wear
This is a religious site, so cover your shoulders and knees. Sarongs are available free at the entrance if you need one.
When to go
Late afternoon is best: arrive around 4.30 to 5pm. It’s cooler, the light is soft, and you’ll have the view as the sun begins to set over Kata and Karon. On clear days you can see the islands of Phang Nga Bay on the horizon.
Getting there
The road up Nakkerd Hill is steep and winding, so take care on a scooter, or take a taxi or Grab. Once you’re up there, take your time. It’s one of the few places on the island where the loudest sound is the wind chimes.
