Few names say “sunset” like Café del Mar. The bar on Ibiza’s west coast became famous for its sundown soundtracks, and its long-running compilation series turned that sound into a whole genre. Volumen ocho, the eighth in the series, is one of the reasons Phuket Global Radio sounds the way it does.
What we love
It’s a gloriously eclectic set. Goldfrapp’s “Utopia” (New Ears mix) floats in on a cloud. Dido’s “Worthless” and Lamb’s “Gabriel” bring a voice-led warmth. Mari Boine’s “Gula Gula” (Chilluminati mix) is one of the most quietly hypnotic things we play. Then there’s the jazz-tinged groove of Mark de Clive-Lowe’s “Day by Day” and the playful Digby Jones “Pina Colada” (Jazz mix).
When you’ll hear it
Tracks from this album turn up across the day, but they really come into their own in our Sunset Session. See the full tracklist on the Charts page.
